Use this map to keep the article focused on comparison and the decisions most relevant to Shopify merchants and ecommerce operators evaluating or improving their store.

Ecommerce domain registration involves more than finding a low first-year price: brand clarity, renewal cost, account ownership, DNS, and portability all matter. As mentioned in the Shopify store setup guide, building a brand store means thinking clearly about what you sell and whom you serve.

This article covers domain registration from four angles:

  1. What makes a good domain.

  2. How to research a domain.

  3. How to buy one.

  4. How to point DNS at your store.

What makes a good domain?

Three angles to think from:

1. It has a story

You watched a show, or your partner is called Anny, so you register anny.com. Perfectly reasonable.

A story makes a name romantic and interesting — that's one kind of brand. It's no different from a random name, except the story helps you carry it. Look at shein.com or anker.com: the letters mean nothing, but success gave them brand value. Have a story, and think about how you'll tell it.

2. Business relevance

Take anny.com again—romantic and storied, but hard to interpret. A descriptive name can help a person understand the business, but it does not replace page content, site structure, and brand building.

If you sell jewelry, put the keyword in: annyjewelry.com makes a perfect first impression.

Customers can more easily infer the category, but the word “jewelry” in the domain does not automatically produce search rankings.

3. Pure SEO value

Some people register a domain and find traffic arriving before they've even built a page. Two causes:

One: the domain accumulated backlinks in a past life — someone linked to it years ago, and that traffic flows back once you rebuild. Check a domain's history at the Wayback Machine.

Two: the name already has brand demand. When an established marketplace brand creates its own store, existing customers might search the brand directly. That demand comes from prior awareness, not from an inherent ranking advantage in the domain string.

A domain that has both SEO value and a brand story is the jackpot. To find one, you need to do research.

How to research a domain

1. The SEO staple: SEMrush

A paid SEO tool that can provide keyword, competitor-page, and link data. Use an official account or an authorized organization license. Unofficial shared accounts can expose project, search, and payment data and may breach the service terms.

Keyword and result-page data can support research, but volume is not the only domain criterion. Also check trademarks, renewal price, abuse history, account security, and long-term brand fit.

2. The free gem: Google Trends

Google's trend tool, free. You see how a keyword trends over time; the downside is no absolute volume, and only 20 related keywords.

3. Google Ads Keyword Planner

Register a Google Ads manager account and you get Keyword Planner — its numbers are essentially real advertising data. A valuable keyword shows healthy search and ad volume.

My workflow: validate the idea on Google Trends first; if the trend looks good, check SEMrush for broad-match keywords and competition; then cross-check in Keyword Planner.

With research solved, the next question is choosing.

Other things to consider

Subjective, but from an SEO and memorability standpoint, four rules:

1. Stay relevant

Don't sell jewelry on a recipe domain.

2. Keep it short and easy to spell

Short names are often easier to remember, but seven characters is not a ranking threshold. Test whether someone can hear and type it correctly, check likely misspellings and social handles, and run trademark and existing-brand searches before registration.

3. SEO fit

A descriptive domain can improve comprehension or recall, but a keyword domain does not rank automatically. Prefer a name the business can control for years, without trademark conflict, surprise renewal cost, or likely spelling errors; build search demand through content and customer experience.

4. Which TLD?

.com is common for a general commercial site. A country-code domain can signal local focus, but eligibility, identity, hosting and filing requirements vary by registry and operating location. Domain registration and any filing required to host or serve a site in mainland China are separate questions that need separate verification.

If .com is taken, .net and .co are unrestricted alternatives. Mainstream choice is still .com — though if you're an AI business, .ai may suit you better. It comes back to the first rule: business first.

How to buy a domain

Chinese registrars: Alibaba Cloud

https://cloud.tencent.com/

Alibaba Cloud is convenient — its predecessor HiChina was China's earliest registrar. Tencent Cloud also works; use whichever is handier.

International registrars: GoDaddy

Compare registrars such as GoDaddy, Namecheap, and NameSilo, as well as Shopify or reputable providers used in your jurisdiction. Payment methods and privacy features change; verify first-year and renewal cost, WHOIS privacy, DNSSEC, two-factor authentication, transfer locks, and support before checkout.

https://www.godaddy.com/en-sg

Registrars differ in renewal cost, interface, privacy, DNS controls, account recovery, and transfer flow. Do not let first-year discounts or domain-parking upsells distract from long-term cost and ownership control.

https://www.namecheap.com/

NameSilo bundles hosting, email and other site services — none of which matter for Shopify. What matters is a cheap, safe, stable, convenient home for your domain.

Registrar location does not need to match customer location. Compare the full renewal price, privacy, two-factor authentication, DNS controls, support and transfer process, then choose the provider your team can govern reliably.

How to connect DNS

How you connect the domain to Shopify depends on where you bought it.

Google Domains registrations migrated and Google no longer sells new domains. For any registrar, use the connection flow shown in Settings > Domains; if automatic connection is unavailable, configure the current DNS records manually.

From any other provider, connect manually:

Step 1: Change the DNS records at your registrar

  1. Log in to your registrar account.
  2. Find the DNS settings / domain management area.
  3. Change these records:
    1. Point the A record to Shopify's IPv4 address 23.227.38.65.
    2. Set the host name to @ if needed.
    3. Delete any other A records on the domain.
    4. Point the AAAA record to Shopify's IPv6 address 2620:0127:f00f:5::.
    5. Set the host name to @ if needed.
    6. Delete any other AAAA records.
    7. Point a CNAME record named www to shops.myshopify.com. — include the trailing period.
  4. Save.

Step 2: Connect the domain in Shopify

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
  2. Click Connect existing domain.
  3. Enter your domain, e.g. johns-apparel.info, and click Next.
  4. Click Connect domain.

Verification can take up to 48 hours. Once verified, the domain appears in the Domains section with status Connected.

Still unsure? See Shopify's manual third-party domain connection guide.

After connecting, global propagation can take up to 48 hours, during which things may be briefly unstable.

FAQ:

Q: What are the common DNS record types?

A:

A record (Address Record): resolves a domain to an IPv4 address. AAAA record: resolves a domain to an IPv6 address. CNAME record (Canonical Name): points a domain at another domain, typically for redirects. MX record (Mail Exchange): specifies mail servers and their priority. TXT record: stores text tied to the domain, e.g. SPF and DKIM records. NS record (Name Server): specifies the domain's name servers. SRV record (Service Record): specifies servers providing particular services.

FAQ

What makes a good domain name?
Prioritize easy spelling and speech, no trademark conflict, affordable renewal and a name that can represent the brand long term. Short often helps memory, but there is no seven-character SEO rule, and a keyword domain does not rank automatically.
Which tools should I use before registering?
Check trademarks and existing brands first, then use WHOIS, the Wayback Machine, Google Trends, Search Console, or a properly licensed SEO tool to review history and demand. Keyword data is supporting evidence, not proof that a keyword domain will rank.
Where should I buy a domain?
Compare first-year and renewal price, WHOIS privacy, DNSSEC, account security, transfer locks, support and payment methods. Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, GoDaddy, Namecheap and NameSilo are candidates; no registrar is best for every merchant.
How do I connect the domain to Shopify?
Two steps: change the DNS records at your registrar (A record to 23.227.38.65, AAAA to Shopify's IPv6, CNAME www to shops.myshopify.com.), then in Shopify admin go to Settings → Domains → Connect existing domain. Verification can take up to 48 hours.
