Shopify Cost Calculator: Plans, Payment Fees and Apps

Nolan聊5 min readShopify

“How much does Shopify cost per month?” cannot be answered by subscription price alone. The same plan can produce a different total by region, billing cycle, and payment method, while apps, themes, and domains change fixed cost. This Shopify cost calculator therefore asks for the live rates in your own account instead of presenting one country's price as universal.

Illustration of Shopify subscription, app, domain, and transaction cost layers

Original illustration: total cost combines fixed spending, revenue-based charges, per-order fees, and operating costs outside the platform.

Open Shopify's official billing overview and the pricing page for your region. Record the values currently displayed, then use the formula and interactive worksheet below.

Monthly Shopify cost formula

Separate platform-related cost into fixed and variable portions:

Fixed cost = plan + apps + annual domain ÷ 12 + theme ÷ amortization months + other fixed cost

Variable cost = monthly revenue × (processing rate + third-party transaction rate) + orders × fixed per-order fee

Estimated monthly platform cost = fixed cost + variable cost

This is not a complete profit and loss statement. Product, warehousing, delivery, refunds, disputes, taxes, duties, advertising, and labor are outside the default calculator and still belong in the operating model. Affordability should be measured against contribution margin, not revenue.

A reproducible example

This uses the calculator's starting values to demonstrate the formula; it is not a current Shopify quote. Assume US$10,000 monthly revenue, 200 orders, a US$39 monthly plan, US$50 in apps, a US$20 annual domain, 2.9% processing, a US$0.30 fixed charge per order, and no third-party transaction fee:

The example excludes theme, product, fulfillment, taxes, refunds, advertising, and labor. Replace every input with evidence from the store's region and account.

What to enter

Monthly plan cost

Enter the effective monthly subscription shown for the store's region and billing cycle. Annual billing may collect a full year at once even when the interface displays an effective monthly amount. Use the Shopify plan comparison before choosing a scenario.

Domain and theme

Divide the annual domain charge by 12. A paid theme is not necessarily the final design expense: upgrades, compatibility work, and redesign can still occur. The calculator amortizes a one-time theme purchase over the months you select for internal comparison; it does not change when cash is actually paid.

Apps

Review trials that will renew, usage tiers based on orders or contacts, services billed outside Shopify, and subscriptions that remain active after an app is removed. Start with the minimum app set and export the bill monthly.

Processing rate and fixed charge

These usually come from the payment provider and can vary by card, transaction location, or currency. Enter a rate such as “2.9”, not “0.029”. Enter the fixed per-order charge in the same currency selected in the calculator.

Third-party transaction rate

When an external payment provider is used, Shopify may apply a separate third-party transaction charge. That is not the provider's processing fee. Confirm whether it applies through Shopify's third-party provider documentation, the current plan, and the account bill.

Compare Basic, Grow, and Advanced consistently

Save three scenarios rather than mixing plans in one calculation:

  1. keep revenue and order count constant;
  2. replace plan, processing, and third-party rates for each plan;
  3. keep app, domain, and theme assumptions constant;
  4. compare monthly total and cost per order;
  5. record the verified value of staff, reporting, or market features separately.

If transaction savings do not cover the additional subscription and no added feature solves a real bottleneck, the upgrade lacks a current financial case. If savings consistently exceed the difference, also evaluate the cash-flow effect of annual billing.

Three commonly missed costs

First, not every charge is returned after a refund. Second, cross-border cards, currency conversion, and disputes can sit outside the base rate. Third, an app can move to a higher tier when orders, contacts, or usage increase. A downside scenario can include a contingency, but the contingency is a planning assumption—not a Shopify rule.

Use the interactive worksheet

The calculator below starts with example values; they are not a current Shopify quote. Select one currency and replace the plan, domain, theme, app, and payment inputs with real values. It returns fixed cost, variable cost, monthly total, cost per order, and platform cost as a share of revenue.

Save conservative, expected, and target scenarios. Recalculate when order volume, refunds, payment provider, or app stack changes. A new store should include a zero-order scenario so an annual commitment is not justified only by the best case.

Conclusion

Shopify's value cannot be reduced to the lowest monthly plan, and convenience does not remove payment or app costs. Put verifiable charges into one model, then combine the result with payment eligibility, contribution margin, and the complete Shopify tutorial. Pricing, trials, and rates remain subject to the live official offer.

FAQ

Is the Shopify subscription the entire cost?
No. Total cost can include domain, theme, apps, payment processing, fixed per-order charges, possible third-party transaction fees, and business costs such as product, fulfillment, refunds, advertising, and labor.
Why does the calculator not hard-code every Shopify plan price?
Plan pricing and rates vary by region, billing cycle, provider, and account conditions. The tool starts with examples and requires the merchant to replace them with live official values.
Should Shopify affordability be judged from revenue or profit?
Use contribution margin and cash flow. Revenue has not deducted product, fulfillment, returns, taxes, advertising, or labor and cannot prove that a plan or store is profitable.
